Three-dimensional evaluation of facial morphology in children

چکیده
Class III malocclusion remains one of the most challenging malocclusions for treatment and early or late treatment remains a subject of debate ( Campbell, 1983 ; Ngan, 2006 ; Ovsenik et al. , 2007 ). Baccetti et al. (2005) suggest that the most appropriate time is during the pre-pubertal growth period derived from cervical vertebral maturation criteria. Furthermore, if the optimal time is not observed, it often results in permanent alteration in the path of closure, abnormal growth and subsequent facial deformity, and consequently treatment dif culty increases with age ( Campbell, 1983 ; Guyer et al. , 1986 ; Burns et al. , 2010 ). In order to start treatment with the appropriate appliance, early diagnosis of maxillary retrusion/mandibular protrusion in the deciduous or early mixed dentition is needed ( Baccetti and Tollaro, 1998 ; Cozza et al. , 2004 ; Ngan, 2006 ; Kilic et al. , 2010 ). Most of the studies of early treatment of Class III malocclusion focus on hard tissue changes ( Toffol et al. , 2008 ), although it is also important to estimate soft tissue facial characteristics as well since their changes play an important role in the evaluation and success of the treatment effects ( McDonagh et al. , 2001 ; Kilic et al. , 2010 ). Orthodontists have traditionally based their diagnosis and treatment planning on various records (e.g. photographs and radiographs) representing a three-dimensional (3D) Three-dimensional evaluation of facial morphology in children

Three-dimensional evaluation of facial morphology in children aged 5-6 years with a Class III malocclusion.
The aim of this study was to evaluate facial morphology in 25 Class III and 46 non-Class III children aged 5-6 years using three-dimensional (3D) laser imaging; 3D facial images were obtained, two average facial templates were constructed for the non-Class III male and female groups, each individual face was superimposed on the corresponding average template and group comparisons were evaluated...
متن کاملSoft tissue facial morphology related to headform: a three-dimensional quantitative analysis in childhood.
The object of this investigation was to determine whether children of the same age with different headforms differ in their three-dimensional soft-tissue facial characteristics. The three-dimensional coordinates of 22 standardized facial landmarks were automatically collected in a sample of 70 boys and 71 girls age 11 to 13 years attending a junior high school. From the collected landmarks, sev...
متن کاملA three-dimensional analysis of the effect of atopy on face shape
Three-dimensional (3D) imaging technology has been widely used to analyse facial morphology and has revealed an influence of some medical conditions on craniofacial growth and morphology. The aim of the study is to investigate whether craniofacial morphology is different in atopic Caucasian children compared with controls. Study design included observational longitudinal cohort study. Atopy was...
متن کاملJASs Invited Reviews
In the last few years, technology has provided new instruments for the three-dimensional analysis of human facial morphology. Currently, quantitative assessments of dimensions, spatial positions and relative proportions of distinctive facial features can be obtained for both softand hard(skeletal and dental) tissues. New mathematical tools allow to fuse digital data obtained from various image ...
متن کاملThe influence of snoring, mouth breathing and apnoea on facial morphology in late childhood: a three-dimensional study
OBJECTIVE To explore the relationship between the prevalence of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and face shape morphology in a large cohort of 15-year-old children. DESIGN Observational longitudinal cohort study SETTING Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), South West of England. PARTICIPANTS Three-dimensional surface laser scans were taken for 4784 white British chil...
